Purchase Tickets  Like all the best tales of enchantment, “Swan Lake” involves a beautiful princess, a passionate prince, and a really major obstacle to their happiness. The obstacle is the wicked sorcerer von Rothbart who captures the princess Odette and turns her into a swan by day. Only if a young man pledges his love and marries her can the evil spell be broken. But should he betray her, she will remain a swan forever.
This production of “Swan Lake”, set to Tchaikovsky’s enduring score with choreography by Peter and Kristin Degnan after Lev Ivanov, will feature the beautiful prelude and second act of this popular classical ballet. Performing the principle roles are Ballet Northeast soloist, Julie Degnan as Odette and guest professional Tim Early as Prince Siegfried.
In the prelude Prince Siegfried, charged with finding a bride, is introduced to many eligible candidates. The scene culminates in a delightful peasants’ dance in the palace courtyard.Choosing to postpone his unwelcome decision, Siegfried sets out on a hunting trip where meets the enchanted Princess Odette. After explaining her fate, the prince becomes smitten and vows to save her. During this initial encounter, they perform one of the most exquisite pas de deux in the classical repertory. Also filling the senses are the beautiful waltz of the swan maidens and the sprightly and technically demanding dance of the young swans. Ultimately, von Rothbart appears in the form of a giant owl, keeping the young lovers apart until Odette is transformed back into her swan form.
The second half of this production will feature several original works. “Joplin”, choreographed by Artistic Director, Kristin Degnan and her late husband Peter Degnan, is set to a Scott Joplin ragtime composition. Other select works from Ballet Northeast’s Emerging Choreographers’ Workshop will also be presented.
